Franchise Royalty Calculator

A royalty is a percentage of your gross sales, not your profit, so it comes out whether the month was good or bad. Percentages feel small on a page. Put your own numbers in and see what they cost in real dollars over a year and over a typical ten-year agreement.

Royalty / year

$0

Ad fund / year

$0

All fees / year

$0

That is 0% of gross sales going to the franchisor every year, or about$0 over a ten-year agreement at this sales level.

The number that surprises first-time buyers is not the franchise fee. It is this one. A fee is paid once. A royalty is paid on every dollar of sales for the length of the agreement, which for most food franchises runs ten years before the first renewal.

Why the calculator uses gross sales, not profit

Franchise royalties are charged on gross sales because gross sales are easy for the franchisor to verify and hard to argue with. That matters at food-business margins. A coffee shop clearing a modest net margin still pays the full royalty on every sale, so the royalty eats a much larger share of the profit than the headline percentage suggests. Our guide to how franchise royalties and ad funds work walks through that math in detail.

Where to find your real numbers

Every figure this calculator needs lives in Item 6 of the Franchise Disclosure Document, the "other fees" table. Item 6 lists the ongoing royalty, the advertising or brand-fund contribution, and any technology or software fees, along with how each is calculated and when it is due. Do not use a number from a franchise portal or a sales rep. Use the current FDD. Our plain-English FDD guide shows you where each item sits.

What the calculator does not include

This tool shows recurring franchisor fees only. It is not a profit estimate and it is not a projection of what a location earns. It leaves out rent, labor, cost of goods, your loan payment, and your own pay, all of which come out of the same gross sales. For where a brand's published performance data lives, and why it is a skill to read rather than a promise, see reading a coffee franchise's Item 19. Nothing here is financial advice. Review the numbers with an accountant who can see your full picture.
