What actually happens to propane in the cold

Read the top row first. At a mild 20°F, a 60-percent-full tank puts out 36,000 usable BTU/hr, plenty for most single-appliance carts. Drop to 0°F on that same fill level and output is cut in half, to 18,000 BTU/hr, from temperature alone. Now let the same tank run down to 20 percent full at 0°F: output falls to 10,800 BTU/hr, a 70 percent loss from the mild, full-tank baseline. Cold reduces output. Low fill shrinks the wetted surface area doing the vaporizing. Neither one alone explains why a truck that ran fine all week suddenly starves during a Friday-night cold snap; the two stacking together does. A 30-lb tank scales roughly 1.4 times these numbers at the same percent-full and temperature, per the same source, so a bigger tank buys you a wider margin, not immunity.
The free half of this fix costs nothing: keep tanks above roughly 40 percent full through winter rather than running them down before a swap. Regulator frost is a different problem than tank pressure
A competing article ranking for this topic states that a tank warmer “will do nothing to help keep your equipment temps higher,” which conflates two separate mechanisms. Regulator frost happens as propane expands passing through the regulator body, which chills it enough to condense ambient humidity into frost on the outside, the same way a cold glass sweats on a humid day. If your regulator itself is icing over while the tank still reads full and warm, a tank blanket will not touch it; wipe the condensation off or add a regulator cover instead. If your burners are weakening as the tank empties on a cold night, that is the vaporization problem the blanket actually solves. Buying a blanket to fix a frosty regulator is solving the wrong problem with the right-sounding product.

The one safe fix, and the non-fixes to skip
A tank warmer blanket is a listed electric appliance, and treating it as one matters. National Electrical Code Article 427 requires fixed electric heating equipment of this type to be listed and to have a grounded conductive covering. Electrical-trade references back that up, though this research didn’t check it against the full code text directly. That’s the underlying reason “UL/CSA listed” is a real requirement here, not a marketing nicety.
Four common substitutes are not safe stand-ins, and each has a documented reason why:
- Unlisted heat tape or cable. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has repeatedly warned that heat tapes and cables are tied to an estimated 3,300 residential fires and roughly 20 deaths a year, and recommends only tape certified to UL, CSA, or FM standards. None of those warnings are about propane specifically, but a documented general fire-failure rate next to a fuel cylinder is not a risk worth taking.
- Open flame or a portable space heater near the tank. NFPA 58 treats tank heaters as an outdoor-use category by definition; the code that authorizes them at all does not cover indoor use, and separately prohibits indoor use of 20-lb cylinders generally. Adding an open flame near a cylinder runs against that same logic.
- Hot water poured directly on an in-service tank. Widely warned against across propane and RV forums, a different practice from using warm water on a frozen regulator specifically, which is a smaller, more contained fix aimed at condensation, not the tank body.
- Running a tank indoors to keep it warm. Covered by the same NFPA 58 outdoor-scope rule above; this is a cylinder-location rule as much as a heater rule.
None of these are DIY fixes to attempt. If a tank, regulator, or hose shows damage, or you are unsure whether a setup is safe, call a licensed propane technician rather than improvising.
What the code actually says
NFPA 58’s 2020 edition added a formal definition for a tank heater at Section 3.3.76: a device that applies heat to a container surface in contact with LP-gas liquid, either directly or by circulating liquid through the device and back. Section 6.23.3 ties that definition to an outdoor-use scope and a rule barring indoor use of 20-lb cylinders. Section 6.24.4.6 adds a maintenance requirement no retail listing mentions: a direct-type tank heater must be removed annually so the container surface underneath can be inspected, and if corrosion or coating damage turns up, the tank goes out of service for testing. A blanket left strapped to a tank year-round should still come off once a year for that check.

Does a 100-lb tank need a warmer as much as a 20-lb tank does?
Yes, but for a different reason than most listings imply. A 100-lb tank has more absolute thermal mass and wetted surface area, so it resists cold somewhat better in relative terms, but it also tends to feed a bigger, hungrier setup: NYC's own rule caps food carts at 20-lb cylinders and trucks at 100-lb cylinders, precisely because bigger rigs are built around bigger tanks and bigger BTU demand. No, and most articles skip this distinction.
