Cash Drop Safe for a Restaurant or Cafe: What to Buy

A cash drop safe lets staff deposit cash without opening the main storage compartment. The SentrySafe UC-025K uses a drop slot; the DH-074E uses a hopper, per SentrySafe. OSHA’s late-night-retail guidance recommends drop safes to limit cash available to cashiers.

Choose around deposit fit, mounting, your cash-drop policy, and published rating language. The maker pages for the safes below state no UL burglary rating for their bodies. That is separate from the UL-listed lock American Security specifies for the BWB2020FL.

Mechanism types and what each takes

The selected models illustrate three arrangements:

• Drop slot: SentrySafe calls the UC-025K a drop-slot safe and labels its protection an anti-fish hopper.
• Front-load hopper: SentrySafe specifies a hopper on the DH-074E; American Security specifies front-load deposits on the BWB2020FL.
• Wall-mount drop box: Protex’s WDS-150 models have a drop door and metal baffle. Per Protex, each has 313 cubic inches of capacity.

The fit test

Compare your actual deposit, including its loaded thickness and orientation, with the opening and deposit path. The U.S. Currency Education Program’s history page gives Federal Reserve note dimensions as 6.14 x 2.61 inches. Those face dimensions alone do not determine whether a note must be folded to pass through a slot.

Per Protex, both WDS-150 models have a 7-3/8-inch-wide by 1-3/8-inch-high opening, but maximum deposit thickness is 7/8 inch. Compare the whole deposit, including any bag, receipts, or folded stack, with that limit. For the SentrySafe models, ask for the opening dimensions before choosing a bag; their cited maker pages do not publish them.

The same check applies inside the safe. Per SentrySafe, the UC-025K interior measures 6.5 inches high by 5.8 inches wide by 10.5 inches deep. Interior dimensions do not prove passage through the opening or settle whether a flexible bag fits.

Anti-fishing baffles

Anti-fish features address retrieval through the deposit opening. SentrySafe describes protection against extendable tools or hooked wires on the DH-074E; Protex specifies metal baffles on both WDS-150 models; American Security describes a saw-toothed baffle on the BWB2020FL. These maker claims do not guarantee protection against every retrieval method or establish a burglary rating for the body.

What the ratings mean

UL 687, the burglary-resistant safe standard, is the source of TL ratings. Per Safe and Vault Store’s ratings page:

• TL-15: door/front-face resistance to entry for a net working time of 15 minutes using common hand tools, drills, punches, hammers, and pressure-applying devices.
• TL-30: the same door/front-face scope with 30 minutes, adding abrasive cutting wheels and power saws.
• TL-30X6: the 30-minute test on all six sides.
• TRTL-30X6: adds torch resistance, described on that page as “one of the highest burglar ratings on the market.”

“Net working time” counts only while a tool is in contact with the safe, so it is not a prediction of how long a break-in takes.

UL 1037 covers antitheft alarms and devices, including residential security containers. UL Solutions describes its 2016 sixth edition as three attack levels: Level One is a five-minute attack by one technician with common hand tools; Level Two is ten minutes by two technicians with more aggressive tools and a six-square-inch opening; Level Three is a ten-minute window with the opening reduced to two square inches. The standards use different tools, surfaces, and procedures, so minutes alone are not a like-for-like comparison.

Both are paywalled standards; the descriptions here come from UL’s published summary and the Safe and Vault Store’s rating explainer. If a specific tier matters for a purchase, confirm the current test parameters with UL Solutions.

Lock, body, or both

A lock listing and a body rating identify different parts of the safe. Compare the published designations:

1. Published TL body rating: American Security specifies UL TL-30 for the ACF4824DS, along with 1,746 pounds and exterior dimensions of 47.75 x 24.5 x 26 inches. This is a rating reference, not one of the picks below.
2. Published lock listing and dealer construction classification: American Security specifies a UL-listed ESL10 electronic lock for the BWB2020FL. Safe and Vault Store classifies its body as B-rate; American Security’s cited product page publishes no TL/RSC body rating.
3. No UL body rating stated on the maker pages: SentrySafe UC-025K, DH-074E, and Protex WDS-150/WDS-150E II. An absent designation does not establish a product’s complete testing history.

Set the drop threshold

Three named sources pair safe use with cash-handling controls:

• OSHA’s late-night-retail guidance (OSHA 3153) recommends drop safes, signs about restricted cashier access, and minimal register cash. It also recommends avoiding bills over $20 or keeping cash as low as practical when that is impractical. This advisory publication addresses late-night retail; applying its guidance to a cafe does not replace existing obligations.
• The St. Petersburg (Florida) Police Department recommends no more than $50 in the register at any time. That is a total including the float, not a drop amount added to it. The department also recommends locked-safe storage, frequent deposits, and varying bank-deposit times and routes when armored transport is not used.
• Society Insurance recommends a defined cash-drop policy, staff training, restricted safe access, and combination changes when an employee with access leaves. It also recommends monitoring cash-handling areas.

A hypothetical example of $900 in shift receipts and a $100 opening float illustrates why the terms matter: the $100 float alone exceeds the police department’s $50 total-register recommendation. A hypothetical $50 increment above that float would mean $150 in the drawer, not compliance with the $50 cap.

For arithmetic only, $900 contains 18 full $50 increments, four full $200 increments with $100 remaining, or two full $400 increments with $100 remaining. These divisions do not establish a drop schedule or a maximum drawer balance: transaction size and drop timing also matter. Use a defined policy and staff training, as Society Insurance recommends, rather than treating the arithmetic as a procedure.

Anchoring

SentrySafe includes bolt-down hardware with the UC-025K and DH-074E. Protex provides rear mounting holes and hardware for wood and concrete with both WDS-150 models. American Security’s catalog specifies four anchor holes for the BWB2020FL; Safe and Vault Store describes floor mounting. Follow the selected model’s installation instructions and confirm the mounting requirements for your location.

A step up in construction

The AMSEC BWB2020FL is a dealer-sold option. Per American Security, it has an 11-gauge steel body, a half-inch main door, five 1-inch bolts, and a current UL-listed ESL10 electronic lock. The maker lists exterior dimensions of 29.75 inches high by 20 inches wide by 20 inches deep and a weight of 218 pounds.

It uses a front-load hopper, not a deposit drawer. American Security’s catalog gives a maximum package size of 4 inches high by 11.5 inches wide by 9 inches deep; that is a package limit, not a narrow-slot measurement. The maker describes a saw-toothed anti-fish baffle.

Safe and Vault Store classifies the BWB2020FL as B-rate. That is the dealer’s construction classification. American Security publishes no TL/RSC body rating for this model on its cited product page. Confirm the offered lock configuration with the dealer, whose page uses ESL10XL/ESL20XL terminology rather than the maker’s current ESL10 specification.

What goes through the slot

Compare a cash bag, folded or flat and loaded as intended, against your safe’s opening and deposit path. A bag’s flat dimensions do not establish loaded fit. SentrySafe’s product pages do not publish opening sizes for the two models above; Protex specifies a 7/8-inch maximum deposit thickness for both WDS-150 models.
