Single Phase vs Three Phase Espresso Machine Explained

Most US commercial espresso machines run on single-phase power, including 3-group models. What the phase question really means for your cafe circuit.

If you are buying a commercial espresso machine for a small cafe in the US, you almost certainly need single-phase power, not three-phase. That holds for most 2-group machines and even for plenty of 3-group machines, and it holds because the machine itself only ever sees a single-phase signal regardless of how the building’s service is arranged behind the wall.

The more useful question is not phase at all. It is amperage. A 2-group machine can need a 20-amp circuit or a 30-amp circuit depending on the model, and one manufacturer’s own catalog contains both cases. Below: what phase actually means, why the group-head rule of thumb fails, what the NEMA codes on a spec sheet are telling you, and where the code questions get handed off to a licensed electrician. Every figure is traced to a source at the bottom of the page. There are no wiring instructions anywhere in it, and there should not be.

What single-phase and three-phase actually mean here

Single-phase power delivers one alternating current waveform. Three-phase delivers three offset waveforms and exists mainly to run large motors and heavy industrial or multi-tenant building loads. That is the textbook version, and for a cafe owner it is almost the least important part.

What matters is what your building actually has. Sebastian Corp’s breakdown of commercial service types puts it plainly: single-phase is the most common service type for residential buildings and smaller commercial properties such as retail storefronts, small offices, restaurants, and light commercial occupancies, and a retail tenant in a light commercial building has no use for three-phase service. Signing a lease on a strip-mall unit or a standalone storefront? Single-phase is the likely default, and it is not a limitation you need to solve.

The Coffee Brewers, an equipment retailer that installs this gear, is blunter about the machine side: do not get hung up on how many phases a commercial espresso machine uses. In most US commercial buildings, the 220 to 240V feeding a machine is created by combining two 120V hot legs from a standard single-phase panel. The machine sees a single-phase signal, and it has no way to know whether that signal came from a split-phase panel or from two legs of a building’s three-phase service, which lands at 208V rather than 240V.

So why do manufacturers offer three-phase versions at all? A technical thread on the UK coffee trade forum coffeeforums.co.uk lands on the practitioner answer: there are no three-phase motors on the suppliers’ lists, all single phase, and while espresso machines are often wired to accept three-phase power, none of the specific components in them require it. Read that as informed practitioner consensus rather than a manufacturer engineering statement. It does line up with the rest of the sourced picture: a three-phase wiring option lets a big building spread a heavy heating-element load across three legs. That is a load-balancing accommodation, not a performance upgrade, and the three-phase version of a machine should not be expected to run faster or stronger than the single-phase version of the same model.

Group count does not tell you amperage. Wattage does.

This is where most phase-and-power research goes wrong.

The common rule of thumb says 2-group means 20 amps and 3-group means 30 amps. It is directionally reasonable and it is not reliable per model. Astra Manufacturing’s own catalog contains the counterexample. The full-size Astra Mega II 2-group, model M2S-017, runs 220V at 4,500W and carries a stated 30-amp circuit requirement. The Astra Mega II Compact, model M2CS-019, also 2-group, also 220V, also single-phase, runs at 2,700W, which calculates to about 60 percent of the full-size machine’s current draw and drops it into a different circuit class. Same brand, same group count, genuinely different circuits.

Note the model numbers rather than the family name. Astra sells three distinct machines under the Mega II banner, and their electrical requirements are not interchangeable, which is the single most common way a buyer gets a wrong number into an electrician’s hands.

The arithmetic behind that is simple and worth seeing, because it is the same arithmetic your electrician will start from. Amps equal watts divided by volts. Then a continuous load, meaning one that runs three hours or more, which an all-day espresso machine obviously is, gets multiplied by 1.25 under NEC 210.20(A) as summarized by electrical training sources including ECAL Pro and Expert CE. That gives the minimum overcurrent-device rating, which then rounds up to the next standard breaker size.

Three things stand out. On the 220V machines, the math converges on the manufacturer figure: 15.3A calculated against a 20A stated circuit for the Mega I, 25.6A calculated against a 30A stated circuit for the full-size Mega II. Electricians spec headroom above the bare minimum, and those gaps are what headroom looks like. Second, the Mega III’s 31.25A lands above what a standard 30A breaker leaves, and Astra’s documentation says that machine must be hardwired by a professional and does not plug into a standard wall outlet. It is still a 220V single-phase machine. Three group heads did not make it three-phase.

Third, the 110V M2CS-019-1 row does not converge, and we are leaving that visible rather than hiding it. Halving the voltage roughly doubles the current for a similar heating load, and 2,000W at 110V calculates to 22.7A once the continuous-load factor is applied, above Astra’s own stated 20A. A licensed electrician has several legitimate reasons that can happen, including how the manufacturer classifies the load and what the actual nameplate current on the unit says, and none of them are ours to settle from a spec page. Treat it as a reason to insist on the nameplate current, not just the wattage.

That convergence, and that one exception, are together evidence the method is sound and that it is not a license to skip the nameplate. Use the table to understand the shape of the decision, then read the plate on the unit you are actually quoted and let a licensed electrician run the load calculation for your building.

The 220V Astra machines, and where you actually buy them

The Astra machines above do the teaching work on this page, so it is worth saying plainly where they come from. We checked Amazon directly, and Astra is not there. A search for Astra espresso machines returns no Astra products, and there is no Astra brand filter to fall back on. Astra Manufacturing sells through foodservice-equipment distributors and dealers instead.

These four are exactly that case, and the specs below are the part that matters to your panel anyway.

  • Astra Mega II full-size 2-group (M2S-017), 220V. 4,500W, 30 amps, single-phase, 50/60Hz, 7 L boiler. This is the machine that breaks the 2-group-means-20-amps assumption. Astra’s own page for it states it requires a dedicated circuit, and lists ETL to NSF-4, UL 197, and CSA C22.2.
  • Astra Mega II Compact 2-group (M2CS-019), 220V. 2,700W, 20 amps, 7 L boiler, full-size rotary vane Procon pump, and Astra states it fits in under 20 inches of counter width. Same group count as the machine above, materially smaller heating element, different circuit class. The NSF-4 / UL 197 / CSA trio confirmed on the full-size page was not independently re-verified for this model.
  • Astra Mega I 1-group (M1-011), 220V. 2,700W, 20 amps, 50/60Hz, 5-foot cord, 7 L copper boiler, 30 to 50 psi water supply required, 1-year labor and 2-year parts warranty in the US. It draws 12.27A and calculates to a 15.3A minimum, and Astra still specs a 20-amp circuit rather than the bare minimum. That is headroom practice in the open, consistent with The Coffee Brewers’ own advice to put in a larger circuit when in doubt.
  • Astra Mega III 3-group (M3-013), 220V. 5,500W, single-phase, 17 L boiler, rated up to 720 cups per hour. It must be hardwired by a professional and does not plug into a standard wall outlet. If you assumed 3-group meant three-phase, this machine is the answer: it is 220V single-phase, and what changes at this size is the connection method, not the phase.

If one of these is the machine you want, ask a foodservice-equipment distributor for a current quote and, more to the point of this page, ask for the nameplate photo before your electrician prices the circuit.

The tier that does not need 220V at all

Not every commercial-grade machine forces this conversation. A real class of single-group heat-exchanger machines built for light commercial and prosumer duty runs on standard 110 to 120V single-phase and skips the electrician-before-delivery problem entirely. They are not a substitute for a 2-group machine at volume. They are a legitimate answer for a low-volume bar, a second station, or a space where a panel upgrade is not on the table.

The Bezzera BZ-series is the cleanest illustration of that alternative path. The BZ10 variant is sourced at 110V, 50/60Hz, 1-phase, 1,200W, with a 0.8-gallon tank and no plumbing required, and retailer copy says its electronically heated group head reaches temperature in about 10 minutes. We are mentioning it rather than linking it, for two reasons. A direct Amazon check found no BZ07 machine for sale, only an aftermarket gasket, and BZ-series numbering is a mess across retailers, with BZ07, BZ09, BZ10, and BZ19 designations referring to closely related but not always identical machines, at least one of which a retailer lists as discontinued. If you go looking for one, confirm the exact model designation and its exact wattage on the listing in front of you rather than assuming the figures above carry over.

Reading NEMA plug codes without pretending they are a rule

When your electrician or a spec sheet says L6-30, they are naming a standardized plug and receptacle configuration by voltage, amperage, and locking style. The table below is vocabulary so you can follow the conversation, not a selection tool.

The literature itself describes these as typical associations, not code requirements, and the Astra pair earlier on this page is direct evidence of why. What plug a specific machine needs is set by that machine’s nameplate current and the installing electrician’s own judgment against local code, not by a lookup chart.

Dedicated circuits, hardwiring, and the code questions that are not ours to answer

Every source checked for this article says the same thing about dedicated circuits: the machine gets its own. Not shared with the grinder, not shared with a refrigerator compressor, not hanging off general counter outlets. The Coffee Brewers states that all commercial espresso machines should have dedicated circuits for proper operation, and Astra’s own product page for the Mega II semi-automatic says the machine requires a dedicated circuit for proper installation and use.

Whether that circuit ends in a plug or a hardwired connection depends on the machine. Standard-voltage prosumer units ship with a cord and a 5-15P or 5-20P plug. Many 220V 2-group machines are fitted with an L6-20 or L6-30 twist-lock. The largest machines, the Astra Mega III among them, are hardwired into a junction box and never plug in at all. None of that is settled from a blog article. It is the conversation to have with a licensed electrician before the machine is purchased, so the circuit is waiting when the pallet arrives.

A bigger constraint sits behind all of it, and spec sheets never mention it: your panel’s total available capacity, not your machine’s draw, determines whether a new dedicated circuit is even possible without a panel or service upgrade. That is a site-walkthrough question, and it is the most expensive thing on this page to discover late.

The same disclaimer belongs on the 1.25 multiplier used earlier. That figure comes from NEC 210.20(A) as summarized by third-party electrical training sources, not from the NFPA’s own code text, and a licensed electrician working from your jurisdiction’s currently adopted edition is the authority. The arithmetic on this page exists to make your electrician’s answer legible to you, not to replace it.

Voltage sag is measurable, not vague

If you do end up on 208V service derived from a building’s three-phase supply, the cost is quantifiable. Newco’s electrical reference gives the numbers for one element rating: a 240V, 3,500W heating element produces only 84 percent of its rated power at 220V and 75 percent at 208V, which works out to 2,940W and 2,630W respectively.

That is the honest version of the boiler takes longer to warm up. A quarter of the heating power is gone at 208V, and you feel it in steam recovery during a rush and in how early your opener has to arrive. It does not make the machine unusable, but it belongs in the conversation before you sign, especially if your concept leans on back-to-back milk drinks.

Verifying what your machine actually pulls

Nameplates describe design intent. If you want to know what a machine is drawing under real load, after a repair, or for a documentation request from an insurer or landlord, a clamp meter reads current without disconnecting any wiring.

A clamp meter is the one genuinely useful electrical tool for a cafe owner in this whole topic, because it answers a question a spec sheet cannot: what is this machine drawing right now. It is worth owning if you want to document draw for a lease or insurance conversation, or check whether a machine is running higher than its nameplate after service. Read the boundary carefully though. Taking a reading at a breaker panel means working on a live panel. If that is not something you are trained and confident to do safely, have your electrician take the reading during a scheduled service visit instead. This card is not an invitation to open anything.

Where this leaves you

The phase question resolves faster than most buyers expect: for a small cafe in the US, single-phase, and the machine would not know the difference anyway. What deserves your attention instead is the nameplate wattage of the specific unit you are quoted, whether your panel has capacity for a new dedicated circuit at that size, and whether the machine plugs in or gets hardwired. Get those three answers from a licensed electrician during a site walkthrough, before the purchase order, and the electrical side of this buildout stops being a surprise.

Do I need three-phase power for a commercial espresso machine?

Almost certainly not, for a typical small cafe. The large majority of US commercial espresso machines, including full 2-group and 3-group models, run on single-phase power, which in most US commercial buildings is a 220 to 240V signal made from two 120V legs. Three-phase service itself is uncommon in small retail and light-commercial spaces to begin with, and even machines offered with a three-phase wiring option usually do not functionally need three-phase current for their motor or heating elements.
