Weight capacity has a catch

Every capacity figure you see, 400, 600, 800 pounds per shelf, is an evenly distributed load rating, which manufacturers state; Seville Classics rates its UltraDurable line at up to 800 lb. per shelf on leveling feet, for example. It assumes the weight is spread across the shelf, not piled in one corner, so a heavy point load or off-center stack reduces the real safe capacity.
