Whataburger Franchise Cost: There Is No Way to Apply
Whataburger's website has no franchising section at all. No application, no inquiry form, no published figures. What that means and what the real numbers were.

Search for the cost of a Whataburger franchise and you will find numbers. Search Whataburger’s own website for a way to buy one and you will find nothing at all.
We checked the full site on August 2, 2026. There is no franchising section, no franchise-opportunity page, no inquiry form and no application. That absence is the answer to the question, and it matters more than any figure a directory will quote you.
The finding is the absence
Most large franchised chains make franchising easy to find. There is a “Franchising” link in the footer, or a subdomain, or at minimum a page explaining who they are looking for. Buffalo Wild Wings routes to a parent franchising portal. Church’s runs a separate recruitment domain. Even brands that are not currently accepting applications, like 7 Brew, publish a page saying so.
Whataburger has none of that. We looked at the site as a whole rather than guessing at URLs, and there is no franchise-facing content on it.
That is worth stating carefully. It does not prove Whataburger will never sell a franchise, and it does not mean no franchised Whataburgers exist, because plenty do. What it means is narrower and more useful: there is no public route through which an ordinary person can start that conversation. Every other brand covered on this site has one, even the ones that turned out to be effectively closed.
How it actually grows
Whataburger’s own newsroom tells the story its website otherwise does not. Its expansion coverage is about named existing operators opening more restaurants, groups like KMO Burger, Silvercreek Group, GVCS and Made To Order Holdings, rather than about recruiting anyone new.
That is a recognisable model. A brand that grows by giving more territory to operators it already trusts does not need a recruitment funnel, and often does not want one, because every inbound enquiry costs staff time and almost none of them fit. The result from the outside looks exactly like this: an excellent consumer website with no franchising content at all.
What the old numbers said, and why we are not leading with them
The most specific requirements ever publicly reported for Whataburger came from Forbes in 2020: a candidate needed a net worth of $12.5 million and $5 million in liquid capital, and had to commit to opening five restaurants within five years.
Three things about that. It is six years old, which is several FDD cycles. Those are qualification thresholds, not costs, so they tell you who was eligible rather than what a restaurant took to build. And at the same reporting, 703 of roughly 830 Whataburger locations were company-owned, about 85 percent, which is the opposite profile from a brand pushing franchise growth.
Put together, the picture is consistent: a mostly corporate system that added franchisees selectively, at a capital level that excluded essentially every individual buyer, and which today publishes no route in at all. Our Item 7 guide explains what a real investment disclosure looks like, and none of the above is one.
Where to look instead
If the appeal was a beloved regional burger brand, the honest answer is that the beloved regional burger brands are mostly the ones that do not franchise. In-N-Out does not franchise at all, and Whataburger has no public path.
If the appeal was the category, several burger and chicken brands do publish an application and a single-unit tier. The test worth applying to any of them is the one this page is built on: does the brand’s own site have a territory page, and can you complete an application on it? Our cheapest chicken franchise comparison and the Buffalo Wild Wings breakdown both cover brands where the answer is yes.
Questions worth asking before you chase any brand
- Does the brand’s own website have a franchising section at all? If not, stop there.
- Is there a territory or available-markets page, and does it list your market as open?
- Does the application form let you say you want ONE location, or is the lowest option three or five?
- Does the brand publish a fee and an investment range itself, or only through directories?
- If a figure appears only on third-party sites, what is it actually based on?
- Would a franchise attorney be able to obtain an FDD for this brand on request?
Common questions
Can you buy a Whataburger franchise?
Not through any public channel we could find. We checked whataburger.com in full on August 2, 2026 and it has no franchising section, no franchise-opportunity page, no inquiry form and no application. Most large chains that franchise put a prominent Franchising link in the footer. Whataburger has none.
How much does a Whataburger franchise cost?
Whataburger does not publish a franchise fee, an investment range or a royalty anywhere. The most specific figures ever reported came from Forbes in 2020: a $12.5 million net worth, $5 million in liquid capital, and a commitment to open five restaurants within five years. Those are six years old and were qualification requirements rather than costs, so treat them as historical context, not a price.
Why do other sites list a Whataburger franchise cost?
Because franchise-cost directories publish a figure for almost every brand whether or not the franchisor discloses one. A number attached to a brand with no application process cannot help you, since there is nothing to apply to. We would rather tell you that plainly than repeat an unverifiable range.
Is Whataburger mostly company-owned?
It was heavily so at the last reliable count. Forbes reported in 2020 that 703 of roughly 830 locations were company-owned, about 85 percent. Its own newsroom covers expansion through named existing operators rather than new franchisee recruitment, which is consistent with a system that grows through partners it already has.
What should I look at instead?
If you want a burger or chicken brand you can actually buy into, start with brands that publish an application path and a single-unit tier. Our cheapest chicken franchise comparison and our Buffalo Wild Wings breakdown both cover brands with live recruitment. The test to apply to any brand is whether its own site has a territory page and an application form you can complete.
